4. Fort Patiko (Baker’s Fort) Located about 30 kilometers north of Gulu, Fort Patiko is a historical site established by Sir Samuel Baker in the 19th century. Initially built as a military fortification, it later became a hub for anti-slavery efforts. The fort provides valuable insights into colonial history and the region’s past. The ruins and massive rocks witnessed the horrors of the Arab slave trade. People from northern Uganda were abducted and taken there, where slave traders decided their fate: either execution or a grueling journey on foot to Egypt and the Middle East. The British eventually took control of the site, ostensibly to end the slave trade, but soon after, they colonized the country.
